Caged Teacher
A free teacher explores
And her students want more
To interject metaphors
And philosophy to her students produces an encore
Obtaining adequate books and technology is not a chore
She can walk her halls feeling safe and secure
She teaches in liberty
And lessons flow freely downstream
But a teacher that walks
Down her narrow path to her bob wired class
Can seldom see pass the metal detectors
And the state mandated testing objectives
Her creativity is clipped
And her hands are tied
So she opens her mouth to speak
The caged teacher speaks
With a worried spiel
Of things unrevealed
But yearned for still
And her voice is heard
On a distant hill
For the caged teacher
Speaks of liberty
The free teacher thinks of another creative lesson
And the beauty of connecting life with her lessons without an objection
And the open hearts, eager eyes and captive ears
That long to hear her lessons flow free
So she names the audience her own
But a caged teacher stands on the coffin of dreams
Their shadows are like fire in her bones bursting at the seams
Causing her to scream
Her creativity is clipped and her hands are tied
But she opens her mouth to speak
The caged teacher speaks
With a worried spiel
Of things unrevealed
But yearned for still
And her voice is heard
On a distant hill
For the caged teacher
Speaks of liberty
Great poem! Just as a teacher fulfills multiple roles, this poem exposes the mixed and varying emotions of a teacher.
ReplyDeleteMetal detectors....testing objectives! Good to know we are not alone. Thanks for putting it all in words so eloquently!
